Password Protected Adobe Reader Files with PDFCreator

Overview

PDFCreator is a free, open-source utility that installs a virtual printer driver allowing the creation of Portable Document Format (PDF) files, which are viewable with the freely available cross-platform Adobe Reader software. PDFCreator is installed on select LFCDS computers as a more feature-rich (but slightly less user-friendly) alternative to CutePDF Writer.

This Tech Tip demonstrates how to create a password-protected PDF using PDFCreator.

  1. Open the document to be converted to a PDF.
  2. Select File->Print
  3. Select PDFCreator as the (virtual) printer:
  4. Select options & click Print
  5. Click Options
  6. Select Formats-PDF, then activate the Security tab
  7. Check:
    • Use Security
    • Password Required to open document
    • Disallow user to: Modify the document
  8. Click Save
  9. Click Save
  10. Navigate to the location to save the document
  11. Enter a file name
  12. Click Save
  13. Enter:
    • Password
    • Repeat password
       
  14. Click OK
