Embed a PowerPoint Presentation as a Playable Video on the Panther Portal

How to Embed a PowerPoint Presentation as a Playable Video on the Portal Using SkyDrive

1.       Make sure that you have a folder in your SkyDrive set up with global (Everyone) access. To do this…

a.       Open your SkyDrive to the location where you would like to create this folder

b.      Click the folder icon in the Create bar

c.       Click the Change link next to “Share with: Just me”

d.      Pull the slider all the way up to Everyone (public)

e.      Name the folder and click Next

2.       Add the PowerPoint to be shared to this folder, to do this…

a.       If you just created the folder and are at the window that says “Add documents to ____”, drag the PowerPoint presentation’s icon on to the box that says “Drop documents here”
…or…
If you already had the folder, navigate into it and click the Add Files link in the Create bar and then drag the PowerPoint presentation’s icon on to the box that says “Drop documents here”

b.      Click Continue

3.       Grab the HTML embed code for the PowerPoint presentation on your SkyDrive. To do this…

a.       Click on the row _but not on the icon or name_ of the PowerPoint presentation in your SkyDrive, highlighting that entire row (the information icon will appear on the right: )

b.      Click the Embed link under Sharing on the right

c.       Click once in the HTML mark-up text box and press Control-C to copy it

4.       Navigate to the Portal page in which you want to embed the PowerPoint presentation

5.       Edit the textbox where you want to embed the PowerPoint presentation

6.       Paste the HTML embed code into the text box. To do this…

a.       Toggle to the HTML view of the text box by clicking the HTML button in the toolbar (just over the B for Bold button).

b.      Find the location in your text where you want the PowerPoint Presentation to appear and click once to place the insertion point

c.       Press Control-V to paste the HTML embed code

7.       This is the tricky part: edit the embed URL to use HTTPS instead of HTTP. To do this…

a.       Take a deep breath and look at the HTML embed code that you just pasted in.

b.      Find where it says “<iframe src=http://.../

c.       Change the http to https (the S indicates a secure connection to the server)

8.       Click the Update button on the HTML Source Editor window

9.       Click Save (or Save & Exit) on the text editor

For the curious: Why in tarnation is step 7 necessary?

Our Portal is loaded through an encrypted, secure HTTP connection. Normally an embedded presentation off of the SkyDrive would not be loaded over an encrypted connection. It is possible for a savvy (or devious) web programmer do nefarious things to unencrypted files or images that are presented as part of an encrypted page (for example, using that unencrypted connection to gain access to the encrypted information and steal it). Clearly This Would Be Bad. Therefore, increasingly, modern web browser either present scary warnings or simply refuse to load unencrypted information on an encrypted page. Step 7 changes the embedding instructions so that the presentation is loaded over an encrypted connection, is therefore also secure, and presents no concerns to the web browser – and is therefore cheerfully loaded with no warnings or errors.

Thanks to Seth Battis for contributing these detailed instructions!
