Windows 7 Training Center
Welcome to the
Windows 7 Training Center for LFCDS Faculty & Staff! This page is meant to be the initial training page for you to review in preparation for the new
Microsoft Windows 7 operating system that will be installed on all faculty and staff computers during the summer of 2010, including the new
HP EliteBook 2740p Tablet PC that faculty are receiving. While this page will outline the most important "need to know" resources, we recommend that you visit the regular
Windows 7 Knowledge Base page for additional how-to articles, self-help, and some basic tips and tricks.
Need-To-Know Training Materials
While a lot of things are the same between Windows XP and Windows 7, there are some differences you will need to learn. Once you do, though, we are sure that you will be wondering how you ever lived without them (well, in the same way you wonder how we ever lived without computers)!
We recommend viewing these resources in the order provided below
- Getting Around the Desktop (6 min.): Video that explains the new taskbar, pinning documents, and Aero Shake\Peek.
- Closer Look at Windows and the Taskbar (11 min.): Watch sections 3 "Working with Windows" & 4 "Using the Taskbar and Jump Lists."
- Using Libraries in Windows 7 (4 min.): Watch section 3 "Using Libraries in Windows 7" which explains how your previous "My Documents" folder is now separated into 4 separate sections called Documents, Pictures, Music, & Videos.
- Note: When the video speaks about "Public" folders, please take note that we've replaced those folders with your @Personal folders stored on your computer's local C:\ drive (see picture below). This will make it much easier for you to store personal files separately from school-related ones, yet still be able to easily access them. This will be covered during the summer training sessions in case you need further explanation.
- Searching For Files (2 min.): Watch only the first 2 minutes of section 5 "Using the Search Features in Windows 7."
- You know you can quit when they start speaking about something called "Federated Search."
- Manage Your Files (5 min.): Adds to and reinforces what you've already learned about Libraries and searching in Windows 7.
- Navigate Using the Address Bar (2 min.): Watch this video to see how Windows 7 improves folder navigation.
- Sync Center (Mobile Users Only - 10 min.): Shows how the Sync Center replaces the old way of managing Offline Files.
- If PowerPoint opens, but the presentation doesn't automatically start to play, hit F5 on your keyboard to start the show.
