Visitor Wireless Access

Visitor Internet Access

Overview

Lake Forest Country Day School (LFCDS) provides its guests with network access in various locations around campus. This is provided in addition to the visitor network login account that guests may request to allow them to log into LFCDS computers. Visitor access is only intended to provide guests with certain Internet services and does not provide access to campus-only resources. Visitor access is intended to serve individual workstations, primarily laptop computers and mobile devices. Devices that extend the network (bridges, repeaters, routers, NATs) should not be attached to the network.

Note: LFCDS implements limited content filtering of Internet sites that have been deemed to be inappropriate (e.g., sexual content). Since the Internet filtering for the visitor network is configured the same as for faculty & staff, the wireless passphrase should not be given out to students. If IT becomes aware of student abuse of the visitor network, the passphrase will be rotated.

Wireless Hardware Supported and Configuration

  • Technical Requirements:
    • The wireless interface must support IEEE 802.11g.
    • Your wireless client must be configured to obtain its IP information via DHCP.
    • Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems are currently supported. We understand that visitors may bring a wide variety of platforms to campus and wireless may work on these as well, but we cannot guarantee that it will function on every possible platform.
    • Both the device's operating system and wireless interface must support the Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) protocol. Most newer Wi-Fi Certified devices support WPA out-of-the-box since it has been a requirement  for certification since September 2003.
  • Configuration Settings:
    • Network Name (SSID): Panthers
    • Authentication: WPA2-PSK
    • Encryption: AES
    • Network Key: Since the key is changed periodically, contact the IT Service Center for the current passphrase

Wireless Connection Troubleshooting

If your client is unable to connect to the visitor wireless network, or obtain an IP address, check for the following common problems:

  • Verify you have configured your client to connect specifically to the Panthers wireless network
    • There must be no spaces before or after the network name
    • The network name is case-sensitive
  • Some wireless clients may silently stop trying to connect to a wireless network after a few failures or after waking from sleep mode
    • Reboot the client to force it to try again
  • Verify that the device is configured to use DHCP to obtain an IP address

Wired Access

Most spaces that have unused network jacks can be configured by the IT department for visitor access. Prior to connecting personal computers to the network using a direct cable connection, visitors must contact the IT Service Center to make sure the jack they want to use is configured for visitor access.
