Web Filtering Procedures

Help, I want to show this to my class but it is blocked for them!

Overview

LFCDS filters its Internet traffic. In addition to direct student instruction on appropriate Web browsing, Web filtering provides a line of defense to block out content inappropriate or problematic for our students. However, these automated Web filters lack reflective judgment and sometimes block content with educational value. If you find an educationally valuable Web page blocked for students, please follow the procedure below to request that an exception be made to the content filters.

How do I know a Website is filtered for students?

  1. Faculty will get a Websense "Your organization's Internet use policy restricts access to this web page at this time." message when accessing the site. (Faculty may press Continue to access the site, but students will be blocked entirely.)
  2. The Website falls into categories which are filtered for students, but allowed for faculty:
    1. Webmail (ex: Yahoo! mail, Hotmail, Gmail).
    2. Web Chat and Media Messaging.
    3. Shopping and Auctions (ex: Amazon, LL Bean, eBay).
    4. User Video (ex: YouTube & Google Video).
    5. See chart below for more exceptions.

How do I get a Website made available to my students if I find out it is blocked?

To put in a request with the IT Service Center to unfilter a Web resource for student use on campus, please:

  1. Copy the URL of the page from the address bar of your Internet browser by selecting the entire address.
  2. Paste the URL into the body of an e-mail.
  3. In a separate paragraph, describe the Web resource and for what it will be used.
  4. Type "Web resource unblock request" into the Subject line of the e-mail.
  5. Send the email to @IT Support.
The IT Department will respond to you with a confirmation that the website has been unblocked. Please allow 1 business day for your request to be processed.
